FGD: ENCOURAGING PULP AND PAPER INDUSTRY MORE RESPONSIBLE

Friday, January 24, 2020 — Auriga Nusantara invited a number of civil society groups from provinces with pulpwood plantations and pulp and paper mills for discussions on how to encourage more responsible practices in the sector. Civil society’s focus on this sector is necessary because of its roles in environmental degradation and fire risk. Attention to government policy is also important given the recent weakening of peatland regulations and the lack of environmental safeguards in the approval process for investments in processing capacity expansion.

Besides exchanging information from the field and work priorities, the focused discussion also addressed challenges being faced at the local, national and international levels.

At this meeting, participants agreed to share roles among civil society members towards a more collaborative approach
